PLANNING MIGRATION / SAP APO

Replacing SAP APO: choose the scope before the software.

S↔SAP APO

SAP has announced that mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7, including SAP SCM 7.0 where APO runs, ends on 31 December 2027, with optional extended maintenance to 2030. Use the deadline to decide which planning work you actually need to keep.

THE MIGRATION DECISION / 01

SAP positions SAP IBP, plus PP/DS and advanced ATP in SAP S/4HANA, as the successor path. Enterprise planning suites also target APO migrations. Evaluate SOBERAN when an inventory of your APO usage shows the live work is demand planning, SKU-by-location replenishment, or plant-level production scheduling that must reach an approved purchase, transfer, or production order in your ERP.

01 / SOBERAN

Consider SOBERAN when…

  • Your APO use is Demand Planning, network replenishment, or production scheduling for your plants, not global multi-plant optimization.
  • You want the replacement live before the maintenance deadline, starting with one workflow.
  • Your S/4HANA move is on a different timeline, or part of the group runs a non-SAP ERP.
02 / SAP APO

Consider SAP IBP or an enterprise suite when…

  • You rely on APO for global constrained optimization across many plants and a large supply network.
  • You are moving to SAP S/4HANA and want planning inside the SAP roadmap.
  • You need enterprise S&OP and scenario planning across a global network.

THE MIGRATION AUDIT / 03

Inventory what APO really does today.

Before choosing a successor, list the planning books, jobs, and reports still in use, who reads them, and which decision each one drives. Many teams find a smaller live scope than the original APO design.

Map your APO workflows
  1. List active planning books, jobs, and macros
  2. Name the decision and owner each one supports
  3. Separate demand, supply, production, and ATP use
  4. Pick one workflow to migrate and run in parallel
  5. Retire that APO piece once results match

SAP APO replacement questions

When does SAP APO maintenance end?

SAP announced that mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7 core applications, including SAP SCM 7.0 where APO runs, ends on 31 December 2027. Optional extended maintenance at an additional fee runs to 31 December 2030. Confirm the terms of your contract with SAP.

What does SAP recommend instead of APO?

SAP positions SAP Integrated Business Planning (IBP) for demand, supply, and S&OP, and PP/DS and advanced ATP in SAP S/4HANA for production scheduling and availability checks.

Can SOBERAN replace APO Demand Planning?

For mid-market demand planning and SKU-by-location replenishment, yes, once the scope is validated on your data. Constrained multilevel optimization should be evaluated against enterprise planning suites.

Can SOBERAN replace APO PP/DS?

For mid-market plants, SOBERAN covers finite-capacity scheduling by machine or work center, sequencing with setups and changeovers, rescheduling when a machine stops or material is late, and release of approved production orders to the ERP or MES. Validate your constraints on your own data first; global multi-plant optimization should be evaluated against enterprise suites.

Do we need S/4HANA before replacing APO?

Not for SOBERAN. It is designed to work alongside an existing ERP, including SAP; the objects, permissions, and writeback method for your SAP release are confirmed during scoping.
